Job Description:

  • Full-Time, 40 hours per week
  • Monday- Friday; Must be willing to work three evenings until 8:00pm.
  • Location: Elmhurst, Physical Therapy


The Physical Therapy Technician maintains and supports the clinic environment in a manner conducive to delivering safe, efficient, and quality patient care. Under the direction of the Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, and Occupational Therapist Assistant, the Physical Therapy Technician assists in carrying out rehabilitation procedures and keeping records of ancillary procedures/processes integral to the operation of the clinic, utilizing the DuPage Medical Group C.A.R.E. Values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence). The successful candidate will play a role in helping to in maintain high patient satisfaction as well as high therapist productivity. The Physical Therapy Technician must have the ability to work effectively in both independent and team environments; to be organized with attention to detail; possess diplomacy and strong interpersonal skills; and have the ability to problem solve and think creatively. The Physical Therapy Technician will perform all job duties as allowed within the Illinois Physical Therapy Practice Act or the Illinois Occupational Therapy Practice Act and the Code of Ethics of the APTA or the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Ethics Standards.


A. Knowledge

  1. Modalities
  • Set up and perform modalities including electric stimulation, ultrasound, iontophoresis, fluidotherapy, paraffin wax, cold pack, and hot pack with clinician's instruction.
  • Appropriately drape and position patient.
  • Monitors patient response and discusses with therapist/assistant as necessary.
  1. Exercise
  • Proper patient set-up and exercise as prescribed by the therapist/assistant.
  • Utilizes appropriate education techniques including demonstration, return demonstration, and cuing.
  • Monitor patient's safety and response to exercise intensity and discusses with therapist/assistant as necessary.

C. Receptionist Duties

  • Perform basic functions such as patient check-in, co-pay collection, chart preparation, and answering phones, checking patient's future appointments.
  • Assists receptionists with typing and faxing therapist progress reports in a timely manner.

B. Communication/Interaction

  1. Professionalism
  • Maintains a high level of rapport with all patients, therapists, assistants and staff.
  • Communicates with customers when circumstances occur that may negatively impact service expectations, such as unavoidable delays due to emergency situations, or the patient's own lack of effort in their rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to diversity.
  • Presents self in a professional manner in both appearance and communication.
  • Remains clam under pressure, and maintain a positive attitude regardless of workload demands.
  • Actively listens to patients, and staff to clarify needs.
  • Fosters teamwork amongst all staff.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows DMG policies regarding dress and absenteeism.


  • Timely flowsheet documentation that is legible and complete.
  • Ability to read and understand a treatment program.

C. Quality

  1. Patient Care
  • Performs patient and equipment set-up as directed.
  • Utilizes appropriate education techniques including demonstration, return demonstration, and cuing.
  • Executes interventions of modalities or exercise as directed by therapist/assistant.
  • Notifies therapist/assistant when patient response is abnormal.
  • Clarifies prescribed interventions in advance of patient care.
  1. Customer Service
  • Actively responds to feed-back from satisfaction surveys.
  • Seeks ways to increase physician and patient customer satisfaction with service through anticipation, recognizing, and acting to meet customer needs.
  • Follows through on resolution of problems or issues with customers in an expedient manner.
  • Maintains professionalism and exhibits "good" judgment with regards to patient and staff interaction.

D. Productivity/Efficiency

  • Prepares and reviews chart for the day to maximize efficiency.
  • Anticipates patient and therapist needs by setting up equipment and exam rooms in advance.
  • Communicates timely and effectively with therapists and assistants in regards to patient response.
  • Communicates with therapist/assistants when patients are early, running late or have specific needs.
  • Monitors patient flow in the department, when patients are waiting, discusses with therapist/assistant patient care needs.
  • Monitor and direct 2-3 patients at any given time while maintaining professional composure.

E. Initiative/Innovation

  • Takes initiative in assisting therapists, assistants, tech or receptionists.
  • Takes initiative in generating ideas to improve work process, systems or services.
  • Attends required meetings, is on time, and actively participates.
  • Takes initiative to seek additional assignments when other tasks are completed.
  • Provides ideas for improved clinic organization

F. Safety/Clinic Maintenance

  1. Safety
  • Constant awareness and maintenance self and patient safety.
  • Adheres to Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA) guidelines including universal precautions.
  • Aware of all emergency procedure protocols.
  • Incident reporting is performed and returned within 24 hours.
  1. Clinic Maintenance
  • Notifies supervisor and staff of faulty or damaged equipment; if needed, places equipment out-of service to prevent re-use.
  • Inventory and stock linens and supplies.
  • Clean and maintain all equipment according to established protocol.
  • Complete weekly and monthly maintenance logs.
  • Notify supervisor of inventory and equipment needs.
  • Completes daily Technician Checklist
  • Utilize the Downtime Checklist


  • Knowledge of common physical and occupational therapy abbreviations.
  • Understand principles, as well as contraindications/precautions in the use of physical therapy modalities including electric stimulation, ultrasound, iontophoresis, cold pack, and hot pack.
  • Can identify proper patient set-up on each piece of equipment with the ability to make adjustments
  • Identify planes of movement specific to each joint and understands proper exercise position as described in the PT tech binder.
  • Deep understanding of the fundamental relationship requirements between the Physical and Occupational Therapy department and members of the DMG physician and clinical community.
  • Attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Problem solving, lateral thinking and reasoning skills.
  • Communication skills.


  • High School Diploma
  • Demonstrated computer skills are required.


  • Previous work experience in customer service highly preferred.
