Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Director of the
Genetics program, provides genetic counseling services for
reproductive risk assessment as well as hereditary risk assessment
for patients with family history of genetic disorders. Gathers and
evaluates clinical data in order to determine genetic risks and
provides supportive counseling. Counsels patient families; serves
as patient advocate; and refers individuals and families to
community or state support programs. Serves as educational resource
for other health care professionals. May perform research. Performs
administrative functions necessary for specimen processing and
program support. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Provides
information and support to families at risk for inherited
conditions, birth defects or genetic disorders, analyzing pedigree
data for identification of genetic problems and calculation of
risk. Interviews patients and families to obtain information
regarding health, pregnancy, family/genetic history and pedigree.
Provides individual CVS and amniocentesis counseling for
obstetrical patients. Coordinates post-testing patient follow-up:
communicates results to patients and referring physicians; advises
on risk; explains expected manifestations of disorders; writes
summary letters; provides patient support. Refers patients to
appropriate agencies for long-term care or long-term follow-up
counseling. 2. Coordinates diagnostic testing for chromosome
abnormalities; birth defects and genetic disorders. Analyzes and
issues reports of observations and counsels patients with abnormal
results. Counsels pregnant women referred for medical, family, or
pregnancy histories, advanced age, blood or serum abnormalities and
other diagnosable disorders. Receives calls or contacts from
clinical staff, scheduling visits and ensuring testing is performed
in timely manner. Coordinates specimen shipment to and return from
external laboratories. 3. Coordinates and provides referral of
patients to Clinical Geneticist. 4. Performs related professional
and administrative duties as required; prepares requested
statistical studies. -Job requires completion of a Master's Degree
in Genetic Counseling in order to acquire knowledge of human and
medical genetics, embryology, anatomy, physiology and counseling
techniques. -Must demonstrate ability to work with minimal
oversight in a professional manner, since job is largely performed
under very general supervision by Clinical Director. -Must be board
certified/board eligible by the American Board of Genetic
Counseling. -Basic computer skills required. -Very high level of
analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously
analyze and identify genetic conditions and abnormalities in order
to provide information to patients, families and treating
physicians in a timely manner. -Interacts with various internal
hospital medical, administrative and professional staff in the
course of providing clinical analysis and scheduling patients and
families for testing and counseling. High degree of autonomous
responsibility required for daily contacts with patients, their
